Figure 1
Environmental SEM image of a hand-ground gas dynamic virtual nozzle (GDVN) system. The liquid can be seen to narrow as the outer jacket of high-pressure gas speeds it up as it enters vacuum at about 10 m s−1, where it breaks up into droplets which freeze at about 106°C s−1 (Weierstall et al., 2012BB101; image courtesy of D. DePonte). A Bragg beam is indicated, scattered from a microcrystal in the stream to the top left, and a pump laser is also shown for use with light-sensitive proteins.
