XFEL diffraction snapshot from photosystem II crystals. This is a section with [100] normal through the origin of a three-dimensional data set merged from thousands of microcrystals after indexing. The diffuse scattering, owing to static displacements of the molecules, is seen to extend well beyond the Bragg reflections and can be used both to increase the resolution and assist phasing (Ayyer et al., 2016BB5).
