Sketch of the objective lens area of an electron cryo-microscope. The sample is located inside a cryo-box that minimizes water ice contamination buildup on its surface. The objective lens aperture holder is positioned between the cryo-box and the lower polepiece of the objective lens. By connecting the objective lens aperture to a voltage source, it can be used as a FADE modulator.
