MX and the link to M3 are held by hydro­phobic contacts to the body of the receptor. Together they create an extensive hydro­phobic `platform' facing the hydro­phobic core of the bilayer and a polar side facing the zwitterionic phospho­lipid headgroups [the dashed lines correspond to their positions indicated in Fig. 2[link](b)].
