Johansson and Cauchois developed focusing monochromators for X-rays. The suitability of these monochromators for neutrons is examined by analysis of the wave-length spread, the focusing effect and the reflecting power, taking into consideration the great penetration depth of neutrons. The requirement of optimal reflecting power limits the choice of suitable crystals. Germanium is found useful for monochromators. The integrated reflecting power of Ge as function of the curvature is examined.
