Diffraction and diffusion of X-rays at high and low temperature have allowed a complete study of order-disorder transformations of cadmium-magnesium alloys. The equilibrium diagram in the solid state has been established and the transformation mechanisms analysed by examining quantitively the evolution of long- and short-range order parameters for the ordered phase and of short-range order parameters for the disordered phase. Some observations on the kinetics of transformation may explain certain apparent anomalies of the equilibrium diagram.
