The relationship between the surface area of a catalyst and the crystallite size determined by X-ray measurements is examined. It is shown that simple methods of line-profile analysis may lead to gross errors when there is a wide distribution of crystallite sizes, and that Fourier methods are necessary to establish the correct size-data suitable for surface area determination.
