Nickel powders were subjected to explosive shock waves with a pressure of about 500 kbar and their fine structure was investigated by Fourier analysis and Hall's method. A strong decrease in the size of the coherent scattering regions was observed together with an increase in dislocation density. Lattice strain was also found to decrease. This was attributed to the thermal effect which occured when the shock waves travelled through the powders.
