A diffraction method based on a Mössbauer source combined with an absorber is described, which allows the experimental separation of the elastic from the inelastic parts of the scattered radiation within the regions of Bragg reflexions. Formulae for calculating the elastic and inelastic fractions are derived, experimental details of the method are described and the errors of the method are discussed. The results, so far obtained with 12 reflexions of pentaerythritol show that the part of inelastically scattered radiation, which is usually neglected in X-ray crystal structure analysis, can be represented as a smooth function of sin θ/λ.
