The low-temperature structure of 4-methylpyridine-N-oxide was previously determined in symmetry P41 [Damay et al. (2006), Acta Cryst. B62, 627-633]. Using a recently published symmetry-determination method it was found that the true symmetry of the structure is P41212. The structure was refined in the new space group using X-ray and neutron data. The previously published structure is close to the newly refined structure, but the new structure is in agreement with the results of rotational tunneling spectroscopy, and, in contrast to the structure in symmetry P41, does not require a twofold degeneracy of the tunneling bands.

Special details top
Refinement. The four crystallographically independent molecules are labeled PI, PJ, PK and
PL for the rigid part (excluding the H atoms of the methyl groups), and MI,
MJ, MK and ML for atoms defining the methyl group. Non-hydrogen atoms within
the molecule are labeled from 1 to 8 so that 1 is nitrogen, 2 is oxygen, 3
through 6 are ring carbon atoms with H atoms attached, 7 is the ring carbon
with methyl group attached, and 8 is the carbon of the methyl group. Ring H
atoms are labeled 9 through 12, H atoms of the methyl group are labeled Mx2
through Mx4, with x=I,J,K or L. The molecules without the
methyl groups were refined as rigid bodies. Methyl groups were refined
separately to allow for a free rotation around the C—C bond. To keep the
axis of the methyl group along the C—C bond, one dummy atom with zero
occupancy was defined as part of the methyl group (named MI1 through ML1), and
restrained to have the same position as the the ring atoms PI7 through PL7.
All atoms were part of rigid bodies. In such case no standard uncertainties
for individual parameters of the atoms are available in FullProf. |
