The title compound, 2,4-Hexadiyne-1,6-diyl bis(p-nitrobenzenesulfonate) (pNBS), C18H12N2O10S2, is a symmetrical di-para-substituted diacetylene R—C![[triple bond]](/logos/entities/z-tbnd_rmgif.gif)
C—CC—R where R is –CH2—O—SO2—C6H4—NO2. In this compound, the volume of the NO2 group is 23.0 Å3, almost equal to that of a CH3 group (23.5 Å3) in the well known polymerizable symmetrical diacetylene, 2,4-hexadiyne-1,6-diyl bis(p-toluenesulfonate) (pTS). pNBS, however, crystallizes in an unreactive monomeric form.
