The micro-XANES spectrum at the Mn K edge obtained with a 1 × 3 µm focal spot aligned to the stele in the central portion of the root shown in Fig. 1

(b). Comparison of the spectrum with known standards indicates that at least 90% of the Mn is in the +2 oxidation state.
