XANES of Cu-Zn bovine superoxide dismutase at the (a) Cu and (b) Zn K-edges. The data are for oxidized (solid line) and reduced (dashed line) enzyme in solution. For the Cu K-edge, data for a slurry of crystals are also shown (dotted line); in this case the mixed oxidation state of the Cu sites is clearly evident and can be simulated by simple averaging of the oxidized and reduced spectra.
