Classification of integral membrane proteins as monotopic, bitopic and polytopic (Blobel, 1980BB4). The lipid bilayer of the biological membrane is indicated by the grey belt. The polypeptide segments in the membrane for the monotopic and the bitopic proteins are α-helices as far as their structures are known. Those for the polytopic proteins are α-helix or β-structure.
