Proton pumping mechanism of the bovine cytochrome c oxidase inferred by conformational change upon reduction of the enzyme. The surface of the molecule is represented by blue dots. The carboxyl group of Asp51 must be protonated inside the molecule in the oxidized state. The structure in the reduced state is coloured in green. The side chain is exposed to the molecular surface to release a proton upon reduction. Protons are supplied from the matrix space along hydrogen-bond networks shown by white broken lines (Yoshikawa et al., 1998BB43).
