A stereoview of R. acidophila LH2 is shown as ribbons for protein subunits and as ball-and-sticks for prosthetic groups (PDB code 1KZU; McDermott et al., 1995BB26). LH2 is a nonameric complex, each monomer consisting of two protein subunits of α and β, and two vertically oriented Bch a (green), a horizontally oriented Bch a (blue) and carotenoid (yellow). The solar energy is absorbed efficiently by these prosthetic groups.
