Schematic representation of a porcupine quill section showing the five structural zones located more or less symmetrically with respect to the middle layer. The external surface corresponds to the outer and the inner surface to the side in contact with the animal. The layer thicknesses depend on the overall quill thickness and on the position along the quill.
