Magnetic force microscopy (MFM) image of a 2 µm × 2 µm area of a 400 Å-thick FePd film grown epitaxically on an MgO(001) substrate. The contrast in the image is due to magnetic domains with flux lines directed upwards and downwards with respect to the film plane. The enlarged area shows schematically the magnetic layer profile expected from Kittel (1946BB9) for the presence of closure domains with a magnetization direction in the film plane.
