Simplified diagram of the microdeformation stage. The static zero-volt gap between the sample-mounting jaws was adjusted manually before mounting the sample. Typically the gap would be set at between 100 and 150 µm. The extension of the piezoelectric actuator distorted the parallelogram structure of the device via elastic deformation of the solid-state flexure hinges. The arrows on the right-hand side represent the movement of the jaws relative to the X-ray beam: the movement of the sample-mounting jaws was symmetrical about the centre line. The sizes of the sample and of the gap have been exaggerated for clarity. |
