The geometrical condition for the `upper–upper' case (θ > 0 for both crystals) is shown in (a): the focal line F₁ of the first crystal is the source for the second crystal. Matching of the energy bands is shown in (b): the Bragg angle changes between A₂ and B₂ by an amount that corresponds to the changes of energy and propagation direction between A₁ and B₁.
