Schematics of the population of eg molecular levels for octahedrally coordinated Cu 3d9 and Ni 3d8 ions in undoped La2(Cu,Ni)O4, along with their related octahedral environments. Although Ni2+ is a `non-Jahn–Teller' ion, the degeneracy of eg levels in La2NiO4 is lifted by the tetragonal crystal field of the layered structure. Sr doping in La2CuO4 contracts the Cu—O(1) distance and Ni doping in La2−xSrxCuO4 results in an Ni—O(2) distance similar to that in La2NiO4, but a planar Ni—O(1) distance similar to the Cu—O(1) distance in La2−xSrxCuO4.
