X-ray images of the distal end of the rib recorded using synchrotron X-rays. (a) X-ray image recorded using synchrotron X-rays at Z ≃ 5 m. (b) Absorption-contrast image recorded using synchrotron X-rays at Z ≃ 0 m. The cartilage sample with surrounding soft tissue packed in a transparent plastic bag was used for imaging. Observation of a section of the cartilage; calcification was observed in the central portion of the specimen. This is clearly observed in (a), and less so in (b).
