When the excitation energy is tuned below the 2p–5d dipolar excitation threshold the intensity of the quadrupolar 2p–4f transition is enhanced. The arrows point to the RIXS peak following quadrupolar excitation (hνin = 8940 eV). This feature is well seen at high temperature, where both compounds are close to the trivalent configuration. At low temperature the quadrupolar feature is seen as a weak shoulder. |
