Scattering from a free-standing film of the liquid crystal 4O.8 showing raw data for the in-plane diffraction peak of a seven-layer smectic membrane. As the temperature is lowered, the top layers undergo a liquid-to-hexatic-to-crystalline transition [as shown in panels (a), (b) and (c), respectively], whereas the inner layers remain in the liquid state.
