Phase-contrast light microscopic image of the suspension of myofibrils prepared from a bumblebee flight muscle, observed by using an Olympus IX-70 inverted microscope. Repeating sarcomeres (minimal functional units of muscle) can be observed. Scale bar, 10 µm. The drawing below is a schematic diagram of the structure of an insect flight muscle myofibril. The 1,0 and 1,1 planes are indicated in the cross section.
