Diffraction patterns collected from amorphous SiO2 at 53 GPa (a) before and (b) after laser heating at ∼1200 K. The sharp continuous reflections in (b) correspond to the d-NiAs phase of silica described by Prakapenka et al. (2004BB13). Boron powder was used as a laser absorber. This figure is in colour in the electronic version of the paper.
