The variability in the beaded structure of fibrillin-rich microfibrils is clearly demonstrated here. Adult bovine ciliary zonule microfibrils (extracted/purified by bacterial collagenase/size exclusion) were adsorbed on mica coated with poly L-lysine and subjected to molecular combing in water, followed by electron microscopy. A 56 nm repeating beaded structure is clearly visible at the top of the figure, which represents the relaxed molecular state. Extension of the periodicity up to 120 nm is clearly visible in the centre of the same microfibril. The figure was kindly donated by M. Sherratt and C. Kielty, University of Manchester.
