The variability in the beaded structure of fibrillin-rich microfibrils is clearly demonstrated here. Adult bovine ciliary zonule microfibrils (extracted/purified by bacterial collagenase/size exclusion) were adsorbed on mica coated with poly L-lysine and subjected to molecular combing in water, followed by electron microscopy. A 56 nm repeating beaded structure is clearly visible at the top of the figure, which represents the relaxed molecular state.
