Sketch of an arterial segment and the embedded collagen fibers. The corresponding expected diffraction patterns of the meridional peak from the gap–overlap periodicity of collagen are shown for different directions. The collagen fibers are oriented in axial layers inside the arterial wall, but show no correlation between them in the radial direction. As a consequence, owing to the random orientation, an almost circular diffraction pattern is measured in the radial direction.
