The spectra measured at a fixed exit angle αf in the far-fields of the short (a) and long (b) waveguide show characteristic oscillations that are equidistantly spaced in E−1. This spacing decreases with an increasing waveguide length. A local maximum in the spectrum corresponds to an energy for which the maximum of the far-field diffraction pattern appears at αf > 0, while local minima in the spectrum correspond to energies for which the maximum of the far-field diffraction pattern appears at αf < 0. As indicated by the dashed lines, the measurements yield periods of ΔE−1 = 7.48 × 10−3 keV−1 (a) and ΔE−1 = 3.22 × 10−3 keV−1 (b), respectively.
