Left: schematic of a simple planar detection system. For completeness we also show the signal chain and the evolution of currents and voltages. Ionizing radiation absorbed in the sensitive volume generates electron–hole pairs in direct proportion to the energy deposited. These are subsequently swept towards the appropriate electrode by the electric field induced by the bias voltage Vb.
