Design for a fuel cell optimized for in situ X-ray absorption measurements (front and side views, dimensions given in mm). The front view shows the perforation of the graphite electrode for reducing the X-ray absorption while saving space for the inlets and paths of the fuel (hydrogen and oxygen). The minimal thickness of each graphite plate is reduced to about 0.25 mm, thus minimizing the absorption along the X-ray path (x, see inset). The side view shows the wide angular aperture allowing for possible X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence measurements, as well as the positioning of the MEA inside the cell. |
