Examples of WAXS patterns from ice. (a) Sample frozen without a cryoprotectant; (b) sample frozen in the presence of 20% sucrose; (c) sample frozen in the presence of 20% MPD. The WAXS patterns cover the q-range between ∼1.5 and ∼7 Å−1. The fan-shaped areas of exposure (30° each) represent the specimen depths of 0, 10, 20, 30, 50, 100 and 150 µm from the surface (from the top 0:00 position, clockwise). The 6:00 position was deliberately skipped to avoid confusion. In several cases the thickness of the specimen was less than 150 µm, and scattering considered to have come from the paper (on which the specimen was mounted) was recorded at this depth [the white-saturated area in (c)].
