The outer cylindrical sleeve, made of a hard Al-alloy almost transparent to high-energy X rays, is not represented. Gasket materials consist of polyether ether ketone (PEEK), which has low X-ray absorption, and pyrophyllite (dark hatched when fired). The white rectangle in between top and bottom anvils shows the disc-shape pressure medium (∼1 mm thick), while the black rectangle at its center represents a disc-shape sample. In the RDA, rotation of the bottom anvil with respect to the top anvil promotes shear deformation of the sample.
