Fresnel zone plate lenses can be deducted from the ideal lens with parabolic phase-shift profile (a), by wrapping the phase profile modulo 2π to minimize the absorption in the lens material (b). Owing to manufacturing difficulties of the continuous blazed profile, multilevel zone plates are the discrete approximations of the phase-wrapped lens (c–e).
