Schematic cross section (left) of an optimized cooling geometry for a white-beam mirror. The mirror is depicted in a horizontally deflecting geometry with the beam impinging onto the optical surface (red arrow) with the beam direction into the page. Side-mounted water-cooled heat exchangers (orange) are placed close to the optical surface in combination with notches along the side-faces of the mirror. Optimization of the depth of the groove (Wcut) allows thermal deformation of the optical surface to be minimized. The graph shows the dependence of the thermally induced slope error upon the groove depth, for power distributions computed in Fig. 5[link].
