The effect of solution additives on limiting radiation damage: RNAse case study. (a) RNAse SAXS data (7 × 30 ms exposures; 10 mg ml−1) collected at full flux with no sample flow show severe radiation damage after 30 ms exposure. The addition of 1 mM DTT (b), 1 mM ascorbate (c) and 5% v/v glycerol (d) significantly reduce radiation damage to the sample. In the case of glycerol, damage is not detected until after 300 ms exposure to the full beam. The critical dose (kGy) for RNAse under each condition is reported on each plot.
