Two-dimensional micro-XRF image of a 20 µm cryostat section of cartilage samples. (a) Control immature bovine cartilage explant cultured for 21 days in serum-free culture medium (Khan et al., 2013BB24). (b) Similar cultured cartilage explants treated with growth factors. (c) Platelet-rich plasma treated. Areas of about 700 µm × 400 µm were scanned with 1 µm step size and dwell times of 50–70 ms. The small black gap in (c) is due to a lack of data because of a short beam dump of the synchrotron storage ring during the acquisition period. For each element, all samples are on the same intensity scale.
