The fractional Fourier transform can be seen as a free space propagation between two planes p₁ and p₂ by using quadratic phase factors, as indicated by the two parabolic surfaces q₁ and q₂. See the main text. In this case the sign of the two curvatures are $[{R_1}\,\lt\,0]$ and $[{R_2}\,\gt\,0]$ .
