Comparison of the structures of (a) τ(μ) and (b) λ phases. Both can be described by chains of interpenetrating icosahedra. (a) In τ(μ) there are five such parallel chains continuously running along the 〈100〉 directions, with the sequences 2 + 4 + 2, 3 + 4 + 3, 4 + 4 + 2, 4 + 4 + 2 and 4 + 3 + 3, respectively. (b) In λ the chains are rotated by 27° with respect to the 〈100〉 directions. The chains are interrupted at the origin. The corresponding icosahedral pairs for τ(μ) and λ are marked by red circles.
