The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C21H15ClN2, contains two crystallographically independent molocules. In one of the mol­ecules, the chloro­phenyl ring is disordered over two orientations; these are approximately related by a rotation through 180° about its bond with the imidazole ring. The independent mol­ecules are linked into a chain along the a axis by N—H...N inter­molecular hydrogen bonds.
