Figure 1 The maximum feasible depths for (a) transmission and (b) reflection for a generic neutron source and various synchrotron X-ray sources, based on an acquisition time of 1  h for neutron measurements, using a sampling gauge of 40  mm3, and based on a peak to background ratio of 1 and a sampling volume of 1  mm3 for synchrotron X-rays. Other parameters were extracted from preliminary experiments, as described in Table 1 and part I (Withers, 2004).
