(a) Diffraction spectra for a BZN sample cooled at 2 K h−1 collected from the bulk material (red) compared with the powder pattern from the as-fired surface (blue). (b) Scanning electron micrograph of phases on the surface of a slow-cooled BZN ceramic. The morphology of the surface grains is quite different to that of the interior of the sample; the former exhibiting much larger crystallites with a marked degree of preferred orientation. BZN = Ba(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3. BZ = Ba8ZnNb6O24, and BN = Ba5Nb4O15.
