Temperature profile along the cell as a function of sample temperature (373–1173 K). The sample temperature was measured using a sheathed 1.0 mm-diameter K-type thermocouple in config. A (see Fig. 2[link]b, 2). The position `0' of the thermocouple is the beam position. The displacement of the thermocouple inside the cell was ±45 mm, defining a temperature profile over 90 mm, i.e. the furnace length. Tests were performed using a standard sapphire tube (ID 3 mm, WT 0.5 mm).
