Rietveld refinement of the new MgSO₄·5H₂O phase at 85 K. The sample was prepared by compressing MgSO₄·7H₂O to ∼2 GPa at ∼293 K and then recovering it into liquid nitrogen. The upper image (a) shows the fit to the complete data set; the lower image(b) shows the region 2θ ≤ 60° in more detail. The reflection markers are (bottom up) CO₂, ice Ih and MgSO₄·5H₂O (for further details see text).
