Bragg reflection by a crystalline block within a mosaic plate. Block normals [\hat {\bf G}] are distributed around [\hat{\bf H}], as indicated by the blue cone. The angular width of the distribution is grossly exaggerated; typically, it is a few degrees only. Here, and in all specific examples in this work, we have chosen [\hat{\bf H}] to be collinear with the real-space depth direction [\hat{\bf z}]. Much of our theory also holds for [\hat{\bf H}\not\parallel\hat{\bf z}].
