Bragg reflection by a crystalline block within a mosaic plate. Block normals $[\hat {\bf G}]$ are distributed around $[\hat{\bf H}]$ , as indicated by the blue cone. The angular width of the distribution is grossly exaggerated; typically, it is a few degrees only. Here, and in all specific examples in this work, we have chosen $[\hat{\bf H}]$ to be collinear with the real-space depth direction $[\hat{\bf z}]$ . Much of our theory also holds for $[\hat{\bf H}\not\parallel\hat{\bf z}]$ .
