Representative images of (a) as-isolated, (b) oxidized and (c) reduced perdeuterated human MnSOD crystals. The oxidized crystals shown were obtained by the vapor-diffusion method (see §[link]2) using deuterated substitute reservoir solutions supplemented with potassium permanganate within capillaries. The reduced crystals shown were obtained using the touch-soak method (see §[link]2) using deuterated reservoir supplemented with sodium dithionite within capillaries. The images were taken with identical lighting and the crystal volumes varied from 0.2 to 0.5 mm3.
