The upper diagram is a two-dimensional representation of the extended Brillouin zone of a face-centred cubic lattice (100) section. The magnitude of the scattered wavevector kf,max corresponds to the maximum value of kf arising from the annihilation of a phonon with the maximum possible energy in silicon of ∼66 meV (ω ≃ 100 Trad s−1). The lower diagram is the measured anisotropic inelastic scattering.
