Images of (a) water and (b) buffer with protein microcrystal jets surrounded by the viscoelastic shell. The images were obtained with N9 for [Q_{\rm i} = 5] µl min−1, [Q_{\rm o} = 12] µl min−1 and [m^{\prime}_{\rm g} = 15.3] mg min−1. The crystal concentration was adjusted to be [c_{\rm crys} \simeq] 15–20%(v/v) after settlement. The arrows approximately indicate the tip of the tapering meniscus.
