Schematic showing a case where two complimentary strain measurements produce unrepresentative volume averages, due to sampling of unique strain states within volumes of strong texture and strain gradients. The incident and scattered beams, and each orientation of measured strain and its sampled strain state (shown as strain ellipsoids), are distinguished by blue and orange colors, respectively. A true volumetric average and its associated uncertainty are more closely obtained by ensuring compatibility of measurements under the strain transformation law.
