If the measurements represent only random noise about a singular strain state, the weighted residuals should model a normal distribution, Rw ≃ Mathematical equation. The top row shows that the measured uncertainties yield weighted residuals inconsistent with random noise, whereas the bottom row shows that inflating the uncertainties produces residuals consistent with random noise. This suggests that inflating the measured uncertainties is required to represent the experimental scatter.
